Character Information
Name: Clef Canon: Magic Knight Rayearth (MANGA specifically) and CRAU from Wake Canon Point: Right after distance training the third Magic Knight. So... super early. Wake he was pulled from End Game stuff, like Spark. OU/AU/CRAU/OC: CRAU Age: 749 years old. (Looks 10-12.)
World Information: To start off with, the series was written by Clamp. And it is a typical Clamp series. So hidden twists, heart break, angst. All that. With that warning, here we go.
In Ceiphro everything is ruled by the strength of will of the people. This is on every level of existence in his world. From small individual magic to the very structure of the world, the Pillar. The Pillar is the person who uses his or her own will to support the whole of the world. Their life becomes dedicated to praying for the safety of their world.
When the series opens we see what happens when the Pillar is under duress, for the current Pillar, Princess Emeraude has been kidnapped. As a direct result, monsters are appearing in places where they never were and the world is in very real danger of ending.
Further, there is a legend known only to the most powerful people around the princess that says that only the Magic Knights - heroes from another world - can save the princess. The problem is that it could well be a self fulfilling prophecy, because the people who believe it most... Are the ones with the strongest wills....
CRAU world: Nautilus, the city of change, was in many ways much like Ceiphro. The power there is based upon will, and the various Ascended, became stronger as they Ascended and they had more power over the world. Nautilus, called Naut by Clef, was a living city and was connected strongly to chaos by proximity and power which caused frequent chaos storms. Also known in meta terms as events for those of us familiar with panfandom power nerf jamjars. Powers were not regained directly, but anyone could learn the power of Bending - Bending Reality To Your Will - and many used that to replicate powers from home.
Personal History: As of his canon, Clef was 745 years old at his pull point. Little is known of his life proper to the start of the story. We know that he is the Guru of Ceiphro, serving directly with the princess, friends with Presea (the Pharle or weaponsmith/armorsmith) , aware of Mokona and the legend. It is implied that he had been teacher to Emeraude and Ferio (her brother) when they were younger, which itself implies that he has seen the Pillar system chose a new Pillar in the past. It is implied that he was on at least friendly terms with both Zagato (who kidnapped Emeraude) and Lantis (Zagato's brother who left the world in disgust some years back). We know he has had students in the past, and that at least one of them now serves Zagato directly because she is stupid in love with him. But other than one or two brief flash backs that are more about Emeraude than Clef, that is all we see of his past.
(As a note, there might be more about his past in the anime, and the wikia seems to show that to be true, but as the anime and manga are often in conflict I am taking him from the manga only.)
The first we see of him in the story, he has sent his flying fish to rescue the three Magic Knights as they fell from their world into Ceiphro. The fish, Fyula, brought them to where he was waiting. But he did not reveal himself at first to get a measure of them. He was disappointed in what he saw and when he did introduce himself to them it was... Not ideal. They were as unimpressed with him as he was with them (in all cases one of the Knights, Hikari, is either fully an exception or is on the edge of being one. So for this, I mostly mean Umi and Fuu unless I specify.) They failed to give him the respect he felt he was due. He failed to accede immediately to their demands to send them home.
He told the girls that they had to become the Legendary Magic Knights and save Emeraude. When they refused and demanded to go home, he told them that there was no way to send them homne, then relented and told them that only Princess Emeraude could send them home so they had to go save her.
He gave them their evolving armor, and started training Hikari. Then they were attacked by one of his former students, Alcione. He sent the Knights off to find Presea, the Pharle, to get their evolving weapons while he tried to hold off Alcione.
He wound up having to train Umi and Fuu from a distance, through Makona, and immediately after, found himself in a new world, Nautilus....
Personality: This is a question that due to CRAU, Clef spends a lot of time on himself. He has become excessively introspective, trying to learn what is truly his personality, rather than external forces.
He knows that his loyalty and love (now) are true, are core to him. From home he is loyal to Emeraude, and loves her, her brother, and his friend Presea. He knows from Naut that he loves his adopted son Link, Link's brother Shadow, their princess Zelda, and his many other friends like Nita, Nash, Jane, and Connie. He resents any Storm that has changed or removed any of this love and has studied intensively to try and find a way to make himself and others immune from Storms. (Of course, he has thus far failed....)
Studying is another constant, and one that no Storm or mental control has ever taken from him. He loves to learn. Most of his learning is book learning by choice. He enjoys the written word and absorbing meaning from a room full of texts. He often forgets little things like eating, drinking,, and exercise, when he is diving into a new topic. This is a major source of arguments between him and his adopted son, Link. Link feels/felt that Clef reads too much and that books are pretty much only good as bludgeons or things to sit on if a table is too tall. Clef who has identified himself as a teacher for so long found his son's unwillingness to learn both perplexing and frustrating in the extreme.
Clef has, has always had, a desire to do good. Not to be praised, but because it is what he should be doing. (Okay yes, he does enjoy the praise when he feels he earned it, but it is not the motivation behind the act.) Even the times when his personality was changed, his alignment was changed, or his mind was controlled, he always tried to do good, it was just that what he defined as good changed. Like when the alignment Storm changed him from lawful to chaotic and he decided that the Pillars were enslaving people and thus had to be destroyed to protect everyone they were bespelling. Or when Papillon akumatized him into serving Endos. He thought Endos was good, thus he had to convince everyone else who was good that Endos was to be obeyed, or else. And even when he was controlled that final time and tried to ensorcel others... The one person he killed? Was Zagato. Someone he was sure was an enemy, someone he was sure was evil. He... Still has issues and regrets over that, and is both horrified and relieved that he never got to speak with the man after he came back to life. If he even did. Some small part of Clef does wonder if somehow he Unmade the Priest, rather than killing him and that the spell he was under just kept him from remembering that part...
CRAU developments: One of the mechanics of the game was that for most Ascensions, the player needed to write an essay over how the character changed, so much of this is already written.
His first essay covers from when he joined the game until his first Ascension. this essay covered from then until his attempt to Ascend to Ashura, the next rank. However, the voting (Players voted OOC on who Ascended based on how many positions there were available, after reading the essays) happened as it timed out, with while he was brainwashed and given the situation at the time, I not only voted against him myself, I talked to others explaining that I didn't think they should either. And apparently enough agreed. While Clef was murdering Zagato in bespelled cold blood, his son was Ascending without him, which gave him an extra edge which helped in freeing Clef from the mind control he was under. There was not another Ascension vote after that, but there was a mass Ascending at the end of the game for all who stood to fight, which Clef did.
Between the time of that essay and the end of the game, Clef has been trying to deal with his complex emotions over Zagato, Shadow leaving then returning, then leaving again. His son growing somewhat distant. Zelda leaving and then returning. At the end of the game, he fought with the other Wakened to help stop the Deva Isis from removing all chaos, all change, all growth, from the multiverse and the City decided that it was time for them to all move on. He, like the others gained a massive power boost, and the abilities of their new rank.
Clef was going to go with Zelda and presumably Link, to follow a quest Zelda had placed for herself, to learn more. They had plans to also see Ceiphro and Hyrule as Zelda and Link knew it, and then to settle probably in Hyrule as he felt his role in Ceiphro was over and he simply wished to return to see with his own eyes that the princess was safe, say proper goodbyes, explain what happened with Zagato, and... To appologize to the Magic Knights.
For with Link he learned that destiny should never be forced upon someone, but offered to them along with aid. He regrets how they all, how he especially, treated the Knights.
Other CRAU things of note not mentioned in the essays: in one storm he was a Pokemon trainer and had 2 pokemon when the event ended. In another Storm he was... Um... AUed into Angelic Layer. And in that one he was high up in Piffle and worked with Icchan directly. So... Um... He knows how to create Layers and Angels and... Might do so in game at some point. He tried making for a few people he cares about, and it did not go over all that well, but he might yet try again. Also at one point he had adopted Sora, which apparently made Link super proud because Ten was adopting just about every human kid to show up in the world, but Clef - HIS FATHER - wasn't being that racist... Or... Something. Vlef was just happy that Link was happy and was pleased to leave it at that. Clef also hates Papillion nearly as much as he hated Zagato by this point. Which if anyone from, Miraculous shows up will be... Interesting. Also he tends to float, moving around more as Ascot does than by walking these days.
Key themes:
Learning. He is constantly looking to learn, and it is one of the few constants through canon, game, Storms, and mind control.
Teaching. It is his role. He often met new people by stumbling upon them on his way to practice his magic, found out they were new, and taught them the basics of Bending. (Among the, Billy from Power Rangers and Alya from Miraculous.)
Introspection. This started early in his time in Wake, but has lasted since. He is constantly trying to learn not just what the core of the self is, but how to protect it from exterior alteration. As part of this, and given his family in game was mostly from Hyrule, he has studied reincarnation in detail from sources spanning multiple worlds.
Will power - He has often said that magic in Ceiphro is based on will, focus, practice, and imagination and that Bending is just the same. So he has always focused on being, well, strong willed. Sadly this can often come across as stubborn when he is sure that he is right.
Height sensitivity. In Ceiphro the strongest people OFTEN look young. It is more than implied that they can choose to restart aging at any point and to any point (see Ascot in Rayearth II who chose to go from looking younger than Clef looks to looking in his late teens because - if the teasing is to be believed - he wanted to impress Umi.) It is implied loosely that only those of great power are able to stop aging. So I have since extrapolated that when the aging stops on its own it is because they have reached a certain level of power and after that aging becomes a batter of will, so the younger someone looks while being an adult, the younger they were when they hit that threshold, so the younger one looks the more powerful they are likely to be. That said, while everyone in Ceiphro accepts adults who are hundreds of years old (Clef, the princess....) looking like children, the Magic Knights and the people of Naut see Clef's small body and rounded face and presume he is a child. His armor looking like robes that are 2 sizes too big on him and being shorter than his own staff are not things that help this impression. He was always a little sensitive about this, even in canon with the Knights. But after the Storm that had him working in Piffle, he's been more conscious over it, and disgusted with himself for it. Mostly he floats now to be on eye level with whomever he is speaking to, just to avoid the whole mess.
Main Motivation: Helping the various worlds and people he encounters without causing a flaw. Learning and teaching are tied for a close second, though.
Skills: Magic. Magic. More magic. And magic. Oh, also magic. And science. Plus some magic.
Item: His armor. Like the armor we see in canon constantly, it looks like cloth but can be metal hard and strong when it comes to warding off blows or magic. Further, it contains gems and gems in his world can be used for storage. So for his hammer space items contained in his gems: His staff - it is slightly taller than a tall human, so much taller than him. It also has gems. A hand carved pen with his name in Haylian made for him by Link. One Pokeball - it contains Snorlax. Fyula - a flying fish that does not need water and is faaaar too large to summon inside the train. (Fyula easily carries the three Magic Knights without apparent effort.) A tome of notes he has been compiling while studying in Nautilus. (He's going to be soooo ticked to find the rest of the books he had stored gone, lol.)
Notes: Clef... Clef is like Xion in some ways in that he doesn't actively seek out other people for companionship. Unlike Xion however, he tends to attract attention, and of all my characters may be the one to try the most to interact with the train in various ways. I have already checked with both Zelda's player and Nita's that they are alright with Clef coming in, giving his strong ties to both in Wake.
